What is a sterilization bag and what is it used for?

A sterilization bag is a one-time-use bag used to package medical device products, and then placed in a sterilization equipment, such as a pressure cooker, to safely and effectively sterilize precision equipment, so that medical devices can be sterilized. The most common users of these sterilizing bags as tools are dental professionals, nail technicians, tattoo artists, beauticians and scientific laboratory workers. It is also named Sterilization Pouch .

A sterilization bag mainly consists of two parts - medical paper and a plastic film held together with an adhesive. Most sterilization bags have a built-in adhesive at the opening to properly close and medical sterilization bags before placing in the sterilization unit.

Please note that not all items are sterilized. For example, single-use items in beauty salons, including nail files, should not be put into a sterilizing bag for sterilization. Please refer to individual product instructions to ensure items are suitable for sterilization.

Types of sterilization methods:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are three main ways to ensure proper disinfection.

Steam pressure cooker: This is the most common method of sterilization. Most self-sealing sterilization bags are breathable, allowing steam penetration to properly sterilize your tools.

Unsaturated chemical steam: This is another common method of sterilization that allows steam to settle on the contents. Vapors should not react with packaging materials.

Dry heat: The dry heat sterilization method should not insulate the item from heat, and the sterilization package should be able to withstand higher sterilization temperatures. Note that sterilization bags are not suitable for dry heat sterilization, as paper and plastic are not designed for these high temperatures. Improper use of the self-sealing sterilization bag can cause the sterilization bag to melt. Sterilization packaging should use one of the following materials: paper bags, aluminum foil, plastic tubes or packaging perforated boxes

How to use the sterilization bag:

Carefully place items to be sterilized in the bag and seal. When using multiple bags in the sterilizer, make sure that the plastic side of the bag always faces the paper side of the adjacent bag.

When disassembling, make sure your items are sanitized. Most sterilization bags have signs on the paper side that change once the sterilization bag is complete. Our sterilization bags have bags with various indicators to indicate proper sterilization. When steam sterilized, the check blue light will turn dark green. After ETO disinfection, the pink indicator will turn yellow. These metrics are "process" metrics and should be used in conjunction with biological metrics to verify sterilization effectiveness.

All sterilization bags should be stored in a cool (59°F – 85°F) and dry (40-70% humidity) environment. Items stored and sterilized in KMNPack pouches will be sterile for up to 1 year unless the pouch becomes wet, opened, or damaged.
